Dr Louise Canacott

Clinical Psychologist

Dr Louise is a Clinical and Forensic Psychologist with experience working with adolescents and adults across a range of clinical settings including community mental health services, inpatient services, criminal justice settings and specialist trauma services. She has experience in building effective therapeutic relationships to enable clients to work towards their goals in a collaborative and supportive manner.

Alongside her role in the Consulting Clinic Dr Louise is employed as a Senior Clinical Psychologist in an adolescent inpatient service.

Dr Louise is a Chartered Clinical and Forensic Psychologist with the Psychological Society of Ireland.

Approach

Dr Louise is a warm and compassionate clinician who supports clients to reduce their distress and achieve their therapy goals She has received training in a number of evidence-based therapies including CBT, CFT, EMDR and systemic family therapy and implements these alongside practical skills to achieve positive outcomes. She is strongly influenced by the role of attachment theory and the role of attachment in emotional and relationship difficulties

Research

Dr Louise’s has completed a number of research studies and has disseminated these in peer reviewed journals and presented at conferences. She has completed a meta-analysis and metasynthesis relating to the Wellness Recovery Action Plan resulting in publications in international peer-reviewed journals. Her doctoral research relating to women’s experiences of recovery in forensic services has been presented at national and international conferences.

Expertise

Dr Louise is trained in the assessments and interventions associated with a range of clinical problems including depression, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, eating disorders, emotional regulation difficulties, attachment difficulties and trauma.

Dr Louise has particular expertise in trauma including the impact of childhood trauma, complex trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder and has delivered guest lectures on these topics at UK Universities. She has worked in a number of specialist trauma services and embarked on further training in trauma-focused interventions including EMDR, Trauma-focused CBT, Narrative Exposure Therapy and Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy.
